Internships
Are you currently enrolled at a college/university or professional training program and interested in
practical experience in public health? MCHC has a variety of opportunities that will help you round out
your skill set and apply your knowledge in real-world situations. Internships are only available in our
service areas and are in-person.
Types of Internships
Public Health
Summary: An intern in this position will be assisting a Community Health Worker (CHW) on scheduled home visits (caseload of 33 active participant families per CHW), with outreach to parents of prenatal to children ages 0-18 months and with goal setting and educational development following the Parents as Teachers curriculum. They could also expect to engage with stakeholders, hold focus groups, evaluate programs, perform community health assessments, develop questionnaires/surveys, and conduct data evaluation. An intern may also be asked to work on public health education initiatives and produce print or web content. Interns who are interested in pursuing a career as a community health educator or public health program manager may be interested in this emphasis.
Suggested majors: public health, nutrition/dietetics, psychology, social work, nursing, or health management
Desired skill sets:
- Strong interpersonal skills and interest in community engagement, particularly with underserved populations
- Strong interest in learning and informing about pregnancy and infant development stages, parenting methods, available community resources outside the scope of MCHC’s services, and age-appropriate activities to complement program curriculum
- Comfort using technology (Microsoft applications, video conferencing)
- Proper use of grammar and punctuation/written communication, business telephone etiquette, and safety practices and procedures
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively on a team
- Detail oriented, organized, prompt, culturally informed
Other responsibilities:
- Provides additional staff support as needed
- Attends team events, organization-wide staff meetings and trainings
Development
Summary: An intern in this position will be assisting development staff with grant proposals, letters of intent, grant reports, annual appeal letters, and online marketing/social media promotion. They could also expect to engage with donors, conduct program/internal data evaluation, event planning, and craft press releases or other media content. An intern may also be asked to work on public health education initiatives and produce print or social media content. Interns who are interested in pursuing a nonprofit development or communications-related career may be interested in this emphasis.
Suggested majors: English, marketing, communications, public health
Desired skill sets:
- Excellent writing and editing skills, research and fact-finding, knowledge of current events and public health trends, managing deadlines
- Interpersonal skills and interest in community engagement, particularly with underserved populations
- Proper use of grammar and punctuation, AP style, business telephone etiquette
- Interest in graphic design for online content
- Comfort using technology (Microsoft applications, video conferencing)
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively on a team
- Detail oriented, organized, prompt, culturally informed

Clearances to provide prior to start date: no criminal or child abuse history as determined by a criminal background check and child abuse screening.
Physical Demands/Work Conditions:
All positions require visual and auditory acuity and the physical ability to climb stairs, stand for long periods of time, walk distances, and lift or carry up to 10 pounds. The individual will regularly work in a home environment that is noisy and active. While performing the duties of this position, the individual will travel by automobile and is exposed to changing weather conditions such as heat, cold, dust, fumes, noise, and wetness daily.
