Internship Opportunities with MCHC

Are you currently enrolled at a college/university or professional training program and interested in practical experience in public health? MCHC has a variety of opportunities that will help you round out your skill set and apply your knowledge in real-world situations. Internships are only available in our service areas and are in-person only.

NOTE: interns must provide their up to date PA Child Abuse History Clearance and FBI Criminal History Background Check (volunteer code 1KG6ZJ) prior to starting.

Public Health 

Summary: An intern in this position will be assisting a Community Health Worker (CHW) during home-visits with families with children ages 0-18 months old, outreach events, data collection, and on-site support.

An intern in this position will become familiar with the Parents as Teachers model, common health risk assessments, and chronic disease prevention activities.

They should expect to engage with other nonprofit organizations in our service area, conduct focus groups or surveys and prepare findings for print and online sharing, and help with in-kind donation drives as needed. Individuals interested in a career in the health care field may be interested.

Suggested majors: public health, nutrition/dietetics, psychology, social work, nursing, or health care management

Desired skill sets:

  • Strong interpersonal skills and interest in community engagement, particularly with underserved populations and children
  • Interest in learning and educating about topics such as pregnancy and infant development, family planning, chronic disease prevention, parenting
  • Comfort using technology (Microsoft)
  • Proper use of grammar and punctuation, written communication, telephone etiquette, and safety procedures
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Detail oriented, organized, prompt, culturally informed

Other responsibilities: 

  • Provides additional staff support as needed
  • Attends outreach events, organization-wide staff meetings, and trainings

Marketing & Development

Summary: An intern in this position will be assisting development staff with online marketing and social media content, event coordination, grant proposals, letters of intent, grant reports, and annual appeal letters.

They should expect to engage with MCHC supporters, corporate and foundation partners, and write press releases. Individuals interested in a career in nonprofit development, digital marketing, or other communications-related career may be interested.

Suggested majors: English, marketing, communications, public health

Desired skill sets:

  • Excellent writing and editing skills, research and fact-finding, knowledge of current events and public health trends, managing deadlines
  • Interpersonal skills and interest in community engagement, particularly with underserved populations
  • Proper use of grammar and punctuation, AP style, phone etiquette
  • Interest in graphic design
  • Comfort using technology (Microsoft)
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Detail oriented, organized, prompt, culturally informed
